01.About the app

BookBridgeA sustainable book exchange platform

A mobile platform where book lovers can swap or exchange old and new books with other readers in their city or country. Think “Tinder for books”: users can list books, browse available ones, and connect for swaps.

The app at a glance: home, app icon, navigation, logo, categories and the exchange flow.

02.Problem, planning & research

Challenges & solutions

Research surfaced three reasons people weren’t swapping books. Each one became a design decision.

  1. 01

Lack of trust in strangers for book swaps

“How do I know the other person is genuine? What if I send a book and get nothing back?”

    Survey respondent

    Solution

    Introduced a “Trust Score System”

    • Verified phone and email IDs
    • Public swap history
    • Peer reviews and rating system
    • Trust badges (e.g. “Verified Swapper”, “Community Favorite”)

This feature builds accountability and helps users feel more secure before agreeing to an exchange.

  2. 02

Distance was a barrier to book exchange

“I don’t want to travel across the city just to exchange one book.”

    Solution

Integrated geo-location based filters and local matching

    • Browse books available within a specific radius (e.g. 3 km, 10 km)
    • Neighborhood filters and postal code support
    • Option to meet halfway or suggest pickup points

This empowers users to prioritize convenience and proximity in their swapping experience.

  3. 03

Users felt overwhelmed uploading book details

“Too many fields. I don’t have time to write everything about a book.”

    Solution

Redesigned a 3-step smart book upload flow

    • Step-by-step input with progress indicators
    • Auto-fill suggestions for book title and author via ISBN or Google Books API
    • Drag-and-drop photo upload

By simplifying the flow, we reduced friction and increased listing completion rate during usability testing.

03.Brainstorming & wireframes

Sitemap

Two entry paths, first launch and repeat users, lead to one home. From there the book feed, categories and book details all point to a single core action: add to exchange, then check out against your points balance.

Sitemap: account setup, home, book feed, add to exchange, checkout, balance check and order placed.

Wireframes

Pen and paper first, then a fundamental digital layout once the concept is clear.

From paper sketches to low-fidelity screens.
Wireframe to interface: the same home screen, structure first, then content.

04.Style guide

Clean, modern, and comfortable were my style guide goals.

A calm design with soft neutrals, warm accent tones and the Inter typeface highlights the information. Rounded corners, minimalist iconography and wide layouts create a peaceful, bookish atmosphere.

05.Final showcase

Final designs

01

Splash screen

Delightful animation for brand recall, followed by four onboarding screens: “Swap Stories, Not Just Pages”, “Build Your Bridge of Books”, “From Shelf to Soul” and “Exchange. Experience. Evolve.”

02

Account setup

Simple account creation through your number, no hassle. Sign in, sign up with live password rules, email and phone verification, and a clear success state.

03

Home screen

Browse and swipe books, filter by genre, and view quick details to start a swap. Scrollable categories, recently added and most viewed shelves, top contributors and a bottom navigation built around the central “add a book” action.

04

Book showcase with book details

View book info, a quick description, owner details and send a swap request, all in one screen. Lists can be sorted and filtered, and every book has an image slider.

05

Cart flow and place order

Found a book you like? Choose one to trade and send your request. The checkout shows delivery address, shipment info and your points balance, and an insufficient-balance state nudges you to exchange books to earn points.

06

Add a book flow

Upload a cover, enter book details, select condition and location: quick and simple to list your book, then send it for point estimation.

06.Reflection

Reflection

Designing BookBridge was more than a UX/UI exercise. It was a journey into solving a problem that exists quietly in homes, shelves, and minds across the world: transforming an overlooked habit, letting books collect dust, into a meaningful experience of sharing, discovery, and community.

This project helped me explore how design can enable trust, simplify action, and spark human connection, all within a mobile interface. It challenged me to think not just about usability, but also sustainability, emotional triggers, and system thinking in a product ecosystem.

As a designer, I walk away from this case study more confident in my ability to design for systems, not just screens, and more excited to keep creating solutions that blend technology with humanity.

That’s about it, thanks for reading.
